At 5:19 A.M., investigators opened the black envelope that had appeared during the seven-second blackout at BIA headquarters.

Inside was a list.

Twenty-three names.

Every person on it had one thing in common:

They currently worked for the Boxroom Intelligence Agency.

Analysts.

Field agents.

Technicians.

Supervisors.

Senior officers.

One name had been circled in red.

DIRECTOR ADRIAN HALE

Nobody moved.

Hale was standing in the room.

Trust the Clues. Not the People.

Director Hale had led BIA for eleven years.

He had personally authorized the investigation into Agent Nathan Cole's disappearance.

He had ordered the search for Project Blacklight.

And less than two hours earlier, he had been the person who refused to force open Locker 17.

Now a mysterious source was identifying him as the mole.

Two security officers reached for their weapons.

Hale raised his hands.

"If I were Blacklight," he said quietly, "you would never have seen that list."

Nobody answered.

Then he pointed toward the black envelope.

"Who put it there?"

The surveillance cameras should have answered that question.

They didn't.

During the seven-second blackout...

every camera inside headquarters recorded exactly the same image.

An empty hallway.

Seven Seconds That Never Happened

The timestamp continued normally.

5:18:56.

Then:

Seven seconds were simply missing.

Not corrupted.

According to the recording system...

those seven seconds had never existed.

The same anomaly appeared in every electronic system inside BIA headquarters.

Security cameras.

Door logs.

Computer activity.

Telephone records.

Even the digital clocks.

Someone had not merely disabled the building.

Someone had removed seven seconds from its records.

Agent Cole's warning suddenly felt less like paranoia.

The agency has been compromised.

Director Hale's Secret

Hale was taken to an interrogation room.

He did not resist.

For twenty-three minutes, he answered every question.

Did he know Agent 17?

"No."

Had he worked on Project Blacklight?

"No."

Did he know Evelyn Voss?

"No."

Had he altered BIA records?

"No."

Then investigators placed the twelve-year-old surveillance report on the table.

COLE + 17 ASSIGNED TO BLACKLIGHT.

Hale stared at it.

For the first time that morning...

he looked afraid.

"Where did you find this?"

"Why?"

"Because," Hale said, "I wrote it."

Silence.

The handwriting matched.

A Memory That Wasn't There

Hale insisted he had no memory of writing the note.

Investigators pulled every document he had signed twelve years earlier.

The handwriting was identical.

Same pressure.

Same spacing.

Same unusual shape of the letter G.

There was no reasonable doubt.

Director Adrian Hale had known Agent 17.

He had known about Blacklight.

And somehow...

he had forgotten both.

"People forget names," one analyst said.

Hale shook his head.

"Not entire operations."

Then he asked to see the photograph of Nathan Cole.

For nearly a minute, he said nothing.

Finally:

"I know that room."

The photograph had been taken outside.

There was no room visible.

The Photograph Was Not What It Seemed

Analysts examined the image again.

Cole stood outside a building in downtown Hollywood, Florida.

Three unidentified people stood nearby.

A window reflected the street.

Nothing had changed.

Hale pointed toward the reflection.

"There."

The image was enlarged.

Then enlarged again.

Inside the reflection appeared a doorway.

Behind the doorway...

a room.

A table.

Two chairs.

And a man sitting with his back to the camera.

Hale whispered:

"That's me."

The photograph had supposedly been taken six years ago.

Hale had no memory of ever being there.

The Hidden Message

Investigators enhanced the reflected room.

Something rested on the table in front of Hale.

A document.

Most of the text was unreadable.

One line could be recovered:

SUBJECT CONSENT: A. HALE

Below it:

MEMORY EXTRACTION — PHASE III

Nobody spoke.

Project Blacklight was no longer simply an intelligence operation.

Whatever had happened twelve years ago had involved BIA personnel themselves.

Including its future director.

The First Blacklight Subject

A deeper search of offline archives uncovered another fragment.

The team reconsidered everything they thought they knew.

What if Agent 17 had not been erased from BIA records to hide a crime?

What if Agent 17 had asked to be erased?

And what if Hale's missing memories were not an accident?

The Red Circle

One analyst returned to the list from the black envelope.

Something bothered her.

Why circle Hale's name?

If Evelyn Voss—or whoever had called the secure phone—wanted BIA to identify the mole, why make it so easy?

Agent Cole had warned them:

Trust the clues. Not the people.

The list was a clue.

That did not mean its message was true.

She held the page beneath ultraviolet light.

Nothing.

Heat.

Nothing.

Magnification.

Nothing.

Then she turned it over.

Indented marks appeared across the paper.

Someone had written on another sheet while this one lay beneath it.

They shaded the page with graphite.

A sentence emerged:

THE MOLE IS NOT THE NAME IN THE CIRCLE.

Below it:

THE MOLE IS THE PERSON WHO GAVE YOU THE LIST.

Who Delivered the Envelope?

The room became silent.

The black envelope had appeared during the seven-second blackout.

No cameras had captured anyone entering.

No door had opened.

No security badge had been used.

Only five people had been inside the investigation room.

Director Hale.

Two analysts.

A security officer.

And...

the technician responsible for restoring the secure terminal after Cole's transmission.

His name was Daniel Mercer.

Everyone turned toward his workstation.

Empty.

His jacket remained on the chair.

His coffee was still warm.

Mercer was gone.

The Search Begins

BIA security sealed the building.

Every exit was checked.

No one had left.

Mercer's badge had not been used.

His phone remained on his desk.

His car was still outside.

Then investigators opened his personnel file.

Daniel Mercer had worked for BIA for nine years.

Excellent record.

No disciplinary history.

No suspicious contacts.

Nothing connected him to Blacklight.

Except one detail.

His employment application contained a fingerprint.

The system compared it against evidence recovered from Locker 17.

MATCH: 99.8%

The fingerprint belonged to...

Agent 17.

Agent 17 Never Disappeared

The realization changed the entire investigation.

Agent 17 had not vanished twelve years ago.

He had changed identities.

He had returned to BIA.

He had worked inside headquarters for nine years under another name.

Daniel Mercer.

The technician who maintained the agency's secure systems.

The man with access to cameras.

Records.

Communications.

Archives.

Everything necessary to erase seven seconds.

Everything necessary to erase a person.

But one question remained.

If Mercer was Agent 17...

why leave the message:

I FOUND THE MOLE?

Unless...

he wasn't talking about himself.

The Basement Door

At 5:47 A.M., security reported something unusual.

A door beneath BIA headquarters had opened.

The door did not appear on current building plans.

It did appear on plans from twelve years earlier.

The room beyond it had once belonged to Project Blacklight.

Hale ordered the investigation team downstairs.

At the bottom of the stairwell they found Mercer's BIA badge.

Beside it...

the unmarked HWD key from Locker 17.

And written across the wall in black marker:

NATHAN COLE KNOWS WHAT BLACKLIGHT REALLY DOES.

Below it:

FIND HIM BEFORE VOSS DOES.

Then the lights in the basement came on.

One by one.

Leading deeper underground.

Like a path.

At the end of the corridor stood a steel door.

For the first time anywhere in the recovered Blacklight files...

the symbol on the door had been accompanied by words.

Who Is the Mole Inside BIA?

The evidence in BIA Classified File 003 changes the investigation dramatically.

Daniel Mercer appears to be the missing Agent 17, secretly living under another identity inside the Boxroom Intelligence Agency.

But that does not necessarily make him the mole.

Agent 17's original message claimed:

I FOUND THE MOLE.

He also appears to be warning BIA about Evelyn Voss and directing investigators toward Nathan Cole.

Director Adrian Hale presents another mystery. Evidence suggests he participated in Project Blacklight twelve years earlier but has no memory of doing so.

The central question is therefore no longer simply:

Who betrayed BIA?

It is:

Who inside BIA can trust their own memories?

What Is Project Blacklight?

Within the fictional story of Operation Saving Hollywood, Project Blacklight appears to be a secret BIA program involving memory extraction, altered identities, hidden agents, and classified experiments.

The first three BIA files have revealed that:

• Nathan Cole survived his disappearance.
• Agent 17 was erased from official BIA records.
• Agent 17 may now be living as Daniel Mercer.
• Director Adrian Hale has missing memories connected to Blacklight.
• Evelyn Voss appears in photographs taken decades apart.
• Nathan Cole is identified as Blacklight Subject 02.

Each clue changes the meaning of the evidence that came before it.

That is also an important part of a detective-style escape room: information that initially seems insignificant can become important once your team discovers another clue.
