Merlin's Journal – Entry I: The First Apprentice

Merlin's Journal – Entry I: The First Apprentice

"Knowledge is not given. It is earned."
— Merlin

The following journal entry was supposedly translated from fragments discovered beneath the ruins of an ancient chamber believed to have once belonged to Merlin himself. Whether the manuscript is fact or legend remains unknown.

Year Unknown

Today I welcomed another young apprentice into the academy.

He arrived believing that magic was the ability to move stones without touching them.

By sunset he understood that true magic is something entirely different.

Magic is seeing what others cannot.

Magic is asking questions no one else thinks to ask.

Magic is believing that every locked door exists for a reason.

I did not teach him spells.

I taught him curiosity.

The First Lesson

Many who come seeking knowledge expect easy answers.

There are none.

Every answer creates two new questions.

The walls themselves have become teachers.

Hidden symbols.

Moving mechanisms.

Ancient locks.

Secret passages.

The academy speaks only to those willing to observe.

Those who rush never hear its voice.

Why I Built the Academy

Kings asked me for weapons.

Generals asked me for victories.

Alchemists asked me for impossible formulas.

None understood what I had already learned.

The future of Camelot would never depend upon the strongest knight.

It would depend upon the wisest mind.

That is why I built this place.

Not to create powerful wizards.

But to create thoughtful people.

Every Puzzle Has Meaning

Many apprentices complain.

"Why hide the answers?"

Because life hides them.

"Why make the journey difficult?"

Because wisdom grows only through effort.

"What if we fail?"

Then you have discovered one more path that does not lead to the truth.

Failure is simply another lesson.

The Hidden Chamber

There is one room within this academy that even my finest students have never entered.

Not because the door is locked.

Because they are not ready.

Many believe treasures lie inside.

Others imagine ancient magic.

Both are mistaken.

The greatest secret I have ever protected is not an object.

It is an understanding.

Only those who complete every lesson may discover it.

To Future Apprentices

Perhaps centuries from now these words will still exist.

Perhaps someone unlike my own students will discover this journal.

If that day comes...

Know this.

Do not search for magic.

Search for understanding.

Do not search for shortcuts.

Search for patience.

Do not search for power.

Search for wisdom.

Only then will the academy reveal what has remained hidden for generations.
