The Captain's Log, Page I: The Night We Chased the Black Tide

The Forgotten Journal Behind the Haunted Pirate Shipwreck
Every pirate ship leaves behind a story.
Most are buried beneath the waves.
Some should never be found.
When divers discovered fragments of an old leather journal inside the remains of an unidentified pirate vessel off the Florida coast, historians dismissed it as another sailor's diary. The pages were water-damaged, the ink faded, and many entries had become impossible to read.
Yet the surviving passages told a story unlike any recorded in history.
What follows is a translated copy of the first surviving page.
Captain's Log — 12th Day of the Black Moon
The sea has changed.
No man aboard dares speak of it aloud, yet every soul feels it.
Three nights ago the stars disappeared.
The ocean became still.
Not calm...
Still.
As if the entire world had stopped breathing.
Even the gulls abandoned us.
Only the mist remained.
Our navigator insists we have sailed in circles despite favorable winds. The compass spins whenever darkness falls, and tonight every lantern aboard burned green for nearly an hour before returning to normal.
The crew pretends not to notice.
But I have seen fear before.
This is something different.
This is expectation.
Yesterday we recovered a small chest floating alone upon the water.
No markings.
No ship nearby.
No survivors.
Inside we found neither gold nor jewels.
Only a single black coin.
None among us has seen metal like it.
The coin is colder than the sea itself.
When held to the ear, one can hear waves... even while standing upon dry deck.
Mr. Briggs touched it first.
He now refuses to sleep below deck, claiming someone whispers his name from beneath the hull every night.
The men argue we should throw the cursed thing overboard.
I agreed.
Three times.
Three times it returned.
Each morning it lay once again inside the captain's cabin.
Exactly where I had first placed it.
None confess to moving it.
None would dare.
Today our lookout spotted an island.
No chart records its existence.
No bird circles above it.
No smoke rises from its shore.
Yet there stands an old stone lighthouse.
Its light shines not across the sea...
...but downward into the water.
God help whatever lies beneath.
I have ordered we anchor until sunrise.
The crew believes we seek fresh water.
Only I know the truth.
Something beneath these waters has been waiting for us.
And I fear...
it has finally found us.
— Captain Elias Thorn
The Legend Lives On
Centuries later, treasure hunters continue searching for the wreck of Captain Elias Thorn's mysterious vessel.
Some believe the journal is fiction.
Others believe only fragments have ever been recovered.
What happened after this first entry remains unknown.
For now.
Perhaps somewhere inside the wreck still rests the black coin...
waiting for the next explorer brave enough to open the captain's chest.
